A Book Review: Praying for Your Future Husband

Robin Jones Gunn has been a favorite author of mine since I was young. So I was more than a little excited when Gunn paired up with Tricia Goyer to write a book on praying for your future husband. I had high hopes for Praying for Your Future Husband, and it certainly did not disappoint.

Each chapter is focused on guiding your prayers for your future husband by giving you a particular aspect of his life to pray for. An example would be chapter 6 titled “Pray for Trust”. The chapter is then broken down between Robin and Tricia, each lady sharing her heart and experiences about the topic of the chapter. Gunn and Goyer’s stories are different, but they each began to pray for their future spouses when they were teenagers. It was entertaining to read how those prayers played into the meeting of their husbands. They include stories in each chapter shared by women who prayed for their future husbands. At the end of every chapter is a prayer for him and a prayer for you.

Honestly, Praying for Your Future Husband was one of the best books I have read in a long time. It was challenging. I had to take a look at myself to see how I measured up to the prayers I was praying for my future husband. The chapters encouraged me to focus my prayers. I began to pray for areas of his life I would not have thought to pray for if I had not read Praying for Your Future Husband. Gunn and Goyer stressed the importance and privilege of prayer. Our God wants to hear our prayers for the man he created for us. I love what Gunn said, “By praying for the man you will marry one day, you are drawing closer to the Lord. You, God, and your future husband are being braided together at the heart level through the invisible realm of prayer” (pg 70). This wonderful book changed the way I pray in more areas than just my prayers for my future husband. It should be on every single girl’s, young and old, list of books to read.

Wow, I need to get that book! We did a study on marriage in our college group and the last night we all prayed for/wrote letters to our future spouses. It was so powerful! I started thinking about how experiences we have now will shape the kind of husband/wife we'll be, so we need to pray for learning and growing! e.g. If you want to be loved, pray that people in his life will teach him how to love, etc.

That's awesome, Becca!...It's so true. You really have to examine yourself- do you measure up to the prayers you pray for him? Your example is exactly the kind of stuff they talk about in the book. You should get it- it's worth it!
